In a large country like India, it is next to impossible to contact and collect information from each and every individual owing to enormous resources required. |
|
The National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) was set up by the Government of India in 1969, to collect socio-economic data employing scientific sampling methods. |
|
In Haryana, National Sample Survey work of State samples are being done by E.S.O., Planning Department. |
| Process of data collection by NSS |
|
| 1. |
National Sample Surveys are conducted in the form of various rounds having period from 6 months to one year for each round. |
| 2. |
For each round, two types of samples known as “Central Samples” and “State Samples” have been allotted for conducting these surveys |
| 3. |
Surveys of Central Samples are conducted by Govt. of India and those of State Samples by States. |
| 4. |
The 64rd round of such survey has started from 1st July, 2006 and will continue up to 30th June, 2007. |

| Purpose & Main Objectives |
|

To make use for policy making and plan formulation. |
| 2. |
To ascertain the level of poverty on the basis of consumer expenditure. |
| 3. |
To know the employment & unemployment situation. |
| 4. |
To know incidence & prevalence of disability and their socio-economic status. |
| 5. |
To access the housing condition of the people. |
| 6. |
To know the basic amenities available to the villagers. |
| 7. |
To know about the workforce engaged in various sectors of the economy. |
| 8. |
To know the impact of literacy on social aspects i.e. sex ratio, child marriage etc. |

| Main Functions & Activities |
|
| 1. |
Training the Officers/Officials of the department engaged in conducting the survey. |
| 2. |
Conducting field survey by adopting the concepts & definitions lay down for the purpose of the survey. |
| 3. |
Inspection of Field survey work. |
| 4. |
Joint Inspections are also done in each sub-round (of 3 months duration) by the Senior Officers of NSSO (GOI) & ESO, Haryana for improvement of survey work. |
| 5. |
Convening Quarterly meeting to review the progress of field survey work. |
| 6. |
Sorting out the problems faced during survey work. |
| 7. |
Scrutiny of filled in schedules at district level District Statistical Officer. |
| 8. |
Scrutiny and validity checks of these filled in schedules at State Headquarter. |
| 9. |
Data entry work is done at State Headquarter. |
| 10. |
Validation work (to make data error free) by specially trained staff at headquarter. |
| 11. |
Generation of results and tables by application of Software developed for this purpose. |
| 12. |
Analysis of results on different aspects and preparation of final report on desired topic. |

| Procedure of Collection of Data |
|
| 1. |
The Investigator makes a visit to the selected sampled village/urban block. |
| 2. |
Lists all the households and selects specified number of households on a scientific basis. (as laid down by National Sample Survey Organization) |
| 3. |
Collect the detailed information in the prescribed schedules by interviewing the head of the households or any knowledgeable member of the household |
| 4. |
Collects auxiliary information for each household/enterprise/ establishment. |
| 5. |
